A big question for many companies is “Do I hire a video professional to help me with my marketing video, or do I try to do it myself with the resources I already have”. There are a few different questions you will need to ask yourself before being able to decide what to do. I will cover some of these questions and explain what you should consider doing based on your answers.
The first question you want to ask yourself is “What are my resources?”. Do you own gear? Do you have editing software and adequate computer processing power? Do you have shooting or editing skills? Do you have an employee with these skills? If you are answering “no” to most of these questions, you may want to consider hiring some help.
The next question you need to ask yourself is “Can I write a script that will allow me to achieve my marketing goal?”. Do I have the resources to even execute the script that I am storyboarding? It makes sense to hire someone like a comedian or writer to help you write your script if you do not have the ability to do so. A good script or storyboard is essential to a successful video marketing campaign. It doesn’t matter how beautiful the end product looks if it doesn’t deliver the message you want to deliver. What is the goal of your video?
Do you have friends that can help you? If not, are you willing to spend time and money on a learning? Calculate the time involved in doing it yourself and see what that adds up to. Then calculate the price of gear and any outside help. If this price adds up to a high number, it may be worth hiring a company, such as Barking Fish, to produce your first video for you and show you some best practices. This may help lower your cost on future videos and help you avoid mistakes.
Another question you need to ask yourself when deciding if you need to hire help is “With all of my skills and resources, could my video quality be improved with help?”. There may be areas of weakness that show through in your final product after you have made your first video. It might make sense to hire someone to help in specific areas if you go the route of producing your own videos. Remember that the quality of your video needs to be top notch when marketing yourself online.
Your brand is being represented by the quality of your video. It can actually hurt you if you publish a poor quality video. This is why it is important to hire help if needed.
